(AgapePress) - An evangelical Christian leader says it is clear that America's Roman Catholic bishops have strayed away from their long-held belief on the uniqueness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Last week, American Catholic bishops -- along with leaders from both reformed and conservative Judaism -- issued a joint statement affirming that Jews should not be targeted for conversion to Christianity. David Brickner, executive director of Jews For Jesus, is deeply concerned about that statement. He says the Catholic leaders have erred.

"If Jesus is not the Jewish Messiah, then Christianity is just an opinion, a preference," Brickner says. "And I don't think that Catholics have thought of their faith as just one opinion -- so the bishops have strayed far."

And Brickner says this joint resolution should be a warning to evangelical Christians as well. He calls it "a cautionary tale," especially for those who have been thinking that a movement of reconciliation is possible.

Brickner believes there are many Catholics who believe in the uniqueness of Christ, and he thinks they should be appalled at how far their bishops have strayed from the once firmly held position of the church.

Thet strayed long ago. In fact, they strayed away from the Truth as a collected body of Pagans-mixed-Christians 1467 years ago when the Roman Catholic Church became a church & state designed to kill and destroy Christians the world over.

Photo Aims to Capture 2 Million Faces at Papal Mass
Authors Say It Will Be the World's Largest Picture

KRAKOW, Poland, AUG. 18, 2002 (Zenit.org).- More than 2 million people will appear in the largest photograph in the world, taken during today's papal Mass.

Five photographers using high-resolution cameras worked to compile the picture, in which they say pilgrims' faces will be recognizable.

Eight photographs were taken by five cameras from various points during the Mass. Together, they produced a panoramic photograph with a 280-degree angle.

In order to take the picture, the professionals were placed at a 7-meter-high (23 feet) vantage point, from which they were able to photograph the massive crowd gathered in Blonie Park.

The gigantic image was the idea of Gdansk photographers Slawomir Pultyn and Jerzy Rados, who announced that they will publish it in a poster 2 meters high and 26 meters wide.

The photograph will also be published in sections in a special album, which will soon be on sale. The photographers announced that all the funds collected from the album's sale will be donated to orphanages and homes for the elderly in Krakow.

"The photo is meant to be a testimony of our time, of the men and women who live in it -- people of all professional and social conditions, gathered in a special and extraordinary moment," Pultyn said.

The two photographers have already carried out similar enterprises, including a "family photo of the inhabitants of Gdansk at the end of the century." ZE02081805

The pope's trip to the Americas has ended in Mexico with the canonization of the fabled Juan Diego of Guadalupe, the 464th saint recognized by the church since John Paul's papacy began. The pontiff has now recognized more saints than all his predecessors combined. His readiness to canonize is in service of an eagerness to evangelize. This is John Paul's desire: To raise up from as many nationalities, ethnic groups and indigenous peoples as possible a saint who is of them, from them and yet an exemplar of the universal church.

Just one more piece of evidence declaring this church NOT to be of Christ. Would the "Hedge of Angels" surrounding the True Remnant Church allow such an act? What amazez me is, the Catholics in this church had the offenders arressted. But the pedophile priests that perfomed the same sex acts on church property thousands of times should not be arrested?

NEW YORK -- America's Roman Catholic bishops and leaders of Reform and Conservative Judaism have issued a joint statement affirming that Jews should not be targeted for conversion to Christianity.

The bishops have made similar declarations in the past and the international church has largely dropped the practice of evangelizing Jews. This latest document, "Reflections on Covenant and Mission," grew from more than two decades of biannual meetings between the U.S. religious leaders.

"While the Catholic church regards the saving act of Christ as central to the process of human salvation for all, it also acknowledges that Jews already dwell in a saving covenant with God," the document reads. "Jews are also called by God to prepare the world for God's kingdom."

Participants in the ongoing dialogue are the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs and the National Council of Synagogues. That group represents the Reform movement's Central Conference of American Rabbis and Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the Conservative movement's United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Rabbinical Assembly of Conservative Judaism.

So, Jesus and the Apostles wasted their time before and after the ressurection of Christ? I ask, why was the New Testament written? And everyone knows that to be saved you MUST accept Christ as Savior. And as everyone also knows, the Jews openly deny Christ. Yet, the Roman Catholic church says they can gain Heaven without Christ?

Russian Orthodox Church says Vatican is refusing to heed demand to stop proselytizing

MOSCOW - The Russian Orthodox Church lashed out at the Vatican ( news - web sites) again Tuesday, saying its reply to a letter meant to straighten out strained relations showed that the Roman Catholic Church is unwilling to stop trying to convert people on what the Russian church considers its territory.

(AFP) - The Russian Orthodox Church criticised the Roman Catholic Church on Friday for allegedly attempting to convert young Russians, including orphans. "Vatican forces think they have to transform Russia into a Catholic country to increase their influence in the world," Orthodox spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin told journalists, claiming however that the conversion rate was poor.

Orthodox priest Alexander Abramov also criticised the Catholic church, accusing it of trying "to manipulate children and orphans."

It's amazing to me how I can be tagged a Catholic basher for trying to share Truth. I am ridiculed, attacked, told to stop evangelizing, threatened with death, as well as finacial attacks and private property destoyed for trying to share with Catholics the Truth in Scripture. They actually "expect"me to stop. (Though I never will!) They expect others to "do as they say" yet they are able to do as they please?" And in most cases the Vatican WILL force its will on others!

MEXICO CITY -- Rev. Stafford Poole, a priest of the Vincentian order and a research historian based in Los Angeles, said the people's faith is misplaced and this week's canonization is a "blunder."

"He did not exist," said Poole, author of Our Lady of Guadalupe: The Origins and Sources of a Mexican National Symbol.

"The whole (canonization) process has been basically dishonest," Poole said, arguing that it was packed with pro-Juan Diego scholars and historians.

The Pope comes to town. He canonizes a man by the name of Juan Diego. Afterwards, it is discovered the man never existed. Will the pope retract the canonization? Doubt it. The majority of the "Catholic saints" aren't real saints anyway. See the PROOF he was in fact "canonized" here...

First Indian of the Americas Raised to the Altar
MEXICO CITY, JULY 31, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II canonized Juan Diego, the Indian witness of the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose image helped convert Mexico.

The saint, who lived from 1474 to 1548, is the first Indian of the Americas to be raised to the altar.

Describing the newly canonized saint, the Pontiff said, "He facilitated the fruitful meeting of two worlds" -- the European and Indian, which have contributed to the making of present-day Mexico.

Did you know, the man who heads the "Romeland Insecurity Agency" is a Roman Catholic and a Knights of Columbus. He is now calling to abolish the"Posse Comitatus Act." and put the U.S. under a military dictatorship. More sinister still is the fact that Homeland translates into German as Fatherland.

There is no precedent for the use of this word "homeland" in the United States Government.

The actual name of this agency, Office of Homeland Security, is very reminiscent of 20th century era German/Fascist and Russian/Communist secret police agencies. In America, "Homeland" is a neuter word. In German, however, the word is translated as "Vaterland" (Fatherland), Ridge's job is very similar to that of Heinrich Himmler's in Nazi Germany. A group of 14 women who were beaten as girls at a Christchurch orphanage have been secretly paid out by a Catholic order of nuns.

The Sisters of the Good Shepherd have paid out undisclosed sums of money and given written apologies to the women acknowledging physical abuse at St Joseph's orphanage in Halswell in the 1930s to 1950s.

World Religious Leaders to Meet in Sicily in September
Sant'Egidio Community Convoking 16th Annual Event

ROME, JULY 16, 2002 (Zenit.org).- With an eye toward addressing the problems of terrorism, poverty and globalization, about 350 Jewish, Muslim and Christian religious and lay leaders will meet in Sicily later this summer.

The Sept. 1-3 conference in Palermo will the 16th in a series of annual events organized by the Community of Sant'Egidio, a Rome-based Catholic group involved in social service programs and mediation of political disputes.

This year's event, expected to draw 5,000 participants, will focus on the topic "Religions and Cultures Between Conflict and Dialogue." Two dozen round-table discussions will be held.

Sant'Egidio spokesman Mario Marazziti explained the purpose of the meeting, which will be close to the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"We want dialogue to be the remedy in the short-, medium- and long-term for the temptation to divide the world, for the wall that tries to separate the Western, Jewish and Christian world from the Arab and Muslim world," he told a press conference.

"Dialogue without naiveté, carried out intelligently, aware of all the present difficulties -- I think it can be an opportunity that must be pursued with all our energy and everyone's energy," Marazziti said.

Sant'Egidio Community began to organize these meetings, following the first World Day of Prayer for Peace of religious leaders, convoked by John Paul II in Assisi in 1986. At that time, the Pope invited all to continue "spreading the message of peace and living the spirit of Assisi."

The upcoming meeting in Sicily may also be important for ecumenism. The Orthodox patriarchates of Moscow and Constantinople have confirmed they will send representatives.

Ishmael Noko, secretary-general of the World Lutheran Federation, and Suday C. Mbang, president of the World Methodist Council, will attend the meeting, as will dozens of bishops and more than 10 cardinals.

Rabbi Rene Samuel Sirat, president of the Conference of European Rabbis, will address the opening session.

Muslim representatives will include Iranian Ayatollah Mohammed Ali Taskhiri and Burundian President Pierre Buyoya. ZE02071607

5 Blasphemous Web Pages Shut Down

VATICAN CITY, JULY 10, 2002 (Zenit.org).- A denunciation by L'Osservatore Romano helped lead to the shutdown of five blasphemous Web pages.

The Vatican's semiofficial newspaper reported the news itself today. The paper in October 2000 had denounced an Internet site that blasphemed the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A consequent investigation by the Italian police's Customs Service found four other similar sites, resulting in the closing of all five.

"This brilliant result demonstrates that serious and rigorous investigations can avoid the use of the precious good of freedom of expression to offend the sensitivity and dignity of others," the newspaper explained.

L'Osservatore Romano disclosed that the investigations took a long time because of "the complexity of the necessary operations to discover the enterprises that make the physical space of the sites available, which are located abroad, as generally happens in such cases."

The newspaper also stated that the probe helped to identify "a Roman businessmen who, through the Internet, sold shirts reproducing blasphemous writings. The man has been reported." ZE02071006

Italian Police Block Porn Web Sites With Catholic Imagery

ROME (AP) - Italian police closed down five U.S.-based Web sites that had been blaspheming Catholicism with a combination of pornographic pictures and offensive statements about the Madonna, police said Tuesday. Investigators first learned about the sites, with names that translate into phrases including "Pig Madonna" and "Blasphemy," in 2000.

"At these addresses, the mention of God and the Madonna, besides being preceded by strongly vulgar language, was tied to explicit images of sex," the police said in a statement.

Blasphemy is illegal in Italy and although cursing has been decriminalized, publishing or broadcasting sacrilegious material can be prosecuted, police said.

Col. Giuseppe Montanaro of the police unit involved in the case said the sites were created in Italy and hosted by Internet providers in Washington, D.C., and California.

A man from Rome faces charges in the case. Authorities were still working on what exactly the charges might be, but Montanaro said the man could face imprisonment and a fine.

Police said they used the same computer from which the Web sites were uploaded to remove the offensive material and replace it with the crest of the special police unit involved.

They did not say whether they informed the Internet providers that hosted the sites. Nor did they name the providers.

"We blocked out these sites because they tied a festival of blasphemy with distasteful sexual images in which they mixed the name of God, the name of the Madonna, with religious cursing," Montanaro said. "But this wasn't enough - they then went on to showing a nun in suggestive clothes or other things in poor taste."

The sites got about 12 million hits in the two years they were open, police said. Authorities were first tipped off by an article that appeared in the Vatican newspaper Osservatore Romano in October 2000.

This wasn't the only case of crossborder action over offensive Web sites. In France, human rights groups have battled in court to hold the California-based Yahoo! Internet portal responsible for racist material that has appeared on its Web pages. AP-ES-07-09-02 1848EDT

What really confuses me is this. HOW DO YOU BLASPHEME A HUMAN BEING? Mary IS human correct? Blasphemy is ONLY directed towards GOD according to Scripture! And as MANY have seen, the Vatican blasphemes the Lord DAILY! Want proof? See my "words of a beast" page...

Plus... what about the Vatican and all it's sexual imagery? They have statues as well as painitngs of Mary standing INSIDE the Pagan symbol for the female sex organ. (Yonic symbol) Plus, what of all the Pagan symbols that represent the male sex organ (phallic symbol) in the Vatican courtyard, as well as on the roof of EVERY SINGLE Catholic church the world over! (They call them "steeples" today)

Perhaps someone needs to sue the Vtaican to not only such it's blasphemous website down, they should also close all those churches as well!

Haitian Bishops Warn About Voodoo and Fundamentalists

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, JULY 4, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Bishop Alix Verrier of Les Cayes said the Catholic Church in Haiti is exposed to the dangers of voodoo and to Protestant groups coming from the United States.

The voodoo cult is still deeply rooted in the people and even has legal status equal to other religions, Bishop Verrier told the missionary agency Fides.

Warning against the dangers of U.S.-based Protestant fundamentalist groups, the bishop said that they "come with substantial funds and open schools, and the Catholic Church lacks the means to compete with these schools."

For his part, Bishop Hubert Constant of Fort Liberte, president of the Haitian episcopal conference, said that people "who say that sects are harmless are blind."

Voodoo is a religion that is derived from African polytheism and ancestor worship, and is practiced chiefly in Haiti. The cult, which originated in West Africa, mixes religious fancies with Christian and indigenous elements.

The cults, in which animals like snakes, goats, and chickens are sacrificed, are led by "sorcerers" or "priests." Followers of this cult hope for the cure of illness, personal success and satisfaction by the right to revenge. ZE02070421

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Wireless Flash) -- First, the Vatican was accused of hiding the records of priests who've abused kids. Now, it's being accused of hiding a time machine.

The machine in question is called a "Chronovisor" and was built in the 1950s by a Benedictine monk named Father Pellegrino Ernetti.

No photos of the Chronovisor exist, but paranormal journalist John Chambers says Ernetti reportedly used the "way back machine" to film Christ's crucifixion for Vatican officials.

Ernetti died in 1994 without revealing the secret of the Chronovisor but Chambers says evidence is mounting that the Catholic Church is hiding a working model from the rest of the world, supposedly to keep it from getting into evil hands.

Sound crazy? Maybe, but there may be something to it. Chambers says a Jesuit priest named Father Francois Brune believes the Chronovisor must exist because -- in the priest's words -- "Ernetti wouldn't lie about such things."

No comment. I just thought you would appreciate a good laugh! Did ya get that last line? ROTFL!

U.N. Convention Against Torture Ratified by Vatican

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 26, 2002 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican officially ratified a U.N. convention against torture, calling it a "valid and fitting instrument to struggle against attempts on the dignity of the human person."

The Convention Against Torture and Other Punishments or Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatments had been adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in 1984. The convention came into force in June 1987 and has been ratified by 129 countries.

The document of adherence, signed by John Paul II, was handed to the New York office of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan by Archbishop Renato Martino, the Vatican´s U.N. permanent observer.

The date chosen was significant, as June 26 has been proclaimed the U.N. International Day of Support to the Victims of Torture.

Archbishop Martino reminded the U.N. secretariat that "in contemporary times the Catholic Church has constantly pronounced itself in favor of the unconditional respect of life itself, and has clearly condemned all that which constitutes a violation of the integrity of the human person, such as mutilations, physical or moral torture, [and] psychological pressures."

"With this spirit, the Vatican wishes to contribute its moral support and collaboration to the international community, to encourage the elimination of the inadmissible and inhuman recourse to torture," the archbishop said. ZE02062608

Talk about confusion?! In February of 1990, Pope John Paul II re-insitiutes the "Inquisition" but changes it's name to "The Holy Office" and now he speaks out against torture? Me thinks closing "The Holy Office" would prove he means it eh?

Reality check: The Vatican will indeed continue using torture, and the "governments" will most definitely look the other way. They have done it before, they are doing it now, they will do it again. This so called "ratification" is no different than the bogus "Mea Culpa" of March 12, 2000. It is a public relations ploy, nothing more, nothing less.

Pope Urges Proposes Transcendental Philosophy in Response to Anxiety

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 24, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II encouraged Christians to give "answers of truth and hope" to people suffering from anxiety by exposing them to a philosophy open to transcendence.

In a word, the Pope urged a "return to metaphysics," of which St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) is a leading proponent. The Holy Father presented the proposal in a message he sent Friday to the participants in the third plenary session of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Jamming of radio signals authorized
Special permission for RCMP, military restricted to G8 summit, Pope's visit

TORONTO -- The Canadian military and the RCMP have been given special authorization to jam radio and cellphone signals during the G8 Summit next week and the Pope's visit to Canada in July.

It's the first time police or the military have ever been allowed to block signals, an official said.

The authorization allows the Department of National Defence and the RCMP to use jamming devices around Calgary and Kananaskis, Alta., from June 17 to June 29 for the summit of leaders from Group of Eight nations. They will have the same power to jam signals in Toronto from July 16 to July 31 -- the Pope is scheduled to arrive in Canada July 23 and depart July 29, with three Toronto appearances in between.

It may be the first time the governments have "jammed signals" of private citizens. But it's NOT the first time the Vatican has solicited the help of the civial authorities against the private sector. Watch as the Vatican uses more and more of its power WITHIN the civil authorities.

But Most Other Indicators Show Stability in Personal Commitments

(AgapePress) - A new poll indicates the vast majority of Roman Catholics in the U.S. are not happy with the way church officials are handling the ongoing sex-abuse scandal.

A new USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll indicates 77% of Catholics believe any priest found guilty of abusing a young person in the past should be removed from the priesthood. The percentage moved to 82% for new cases. In addition, 75% of the Catholics polled say their church has done a poor job of dealing with abusive priests.

Almost nine out of ten Catholics -- 87% -- say the Pope should remove a cardinal or bishop who knew that a priest had been sexually abusing young people and responded by simply transferring that priest to another parish without reporting him to the civil authorities.

You know what amazes me? Catholcis stay IN a church that won't even do as their members suggest! PLUS, they stay in a church that WON'T REMOVE men that are MOLESTING THEIR CHILDREN? Perhaps they deserve each other?

A true believer does eventually see the Light and leaves. Praise the Lord for those few that ARE leaving the Synagogue of Satan.

Mutilating a corpse and discreetly packing a piece in your luggage before boarding a plane is the sort of thing that gets people arrested. But not if you are the Pope.

Lopping off a bit of John XXIII and donating it to Sofia's new cathedral was considered an honour to Bulgaria's Roman Catholics, and to a predecessor who died in 1963. Which part was cut off is not clear, because the gift was not part of the official programme of John Paul's four-day visit to Bulgaria, which ended yesterday.

According to the Rome daily La Repubblica the relic, wrapped in a medieval cloth, will be kept in the cathedral as an object of veneration.

It was removed from John's exhumed and restored corpse last July after he was put in a glass coffin and displayed in St Peter's square to thousands of pilgrims. Known as the Good Pope for his compassion, he is on a Vatican fast-track to canonisation, after which he will be St John.

JESUITS HELPED START TWO WORLD WARS

In his book FIFTY YEARS IN THE CHURCH OF ROME, former catholic priest Charles Chiniquy had this to say about the Jesuits: "The Jesuits are a military organization, not a religious order. There chief is the general of an army, not the mere father abbot of a monastery. And the aim of this organization is power. Power in the most despotic excercise. Absolute power, universal power, power to control the World by the volition (will) of a single man. Jesuitism is the most absolute of despotisms (dictatorship); and at the same time, the greatest and the most enormous of abuses." The letter, sent today, was dated Feb. 24, exactly one month after the prayer summit held in St. Francis' city. The "Decalogue" was proclaimed at the end of the largest meeting of religious leaders in history, called in response to the terrorist attacks on the United States and their aftermath. The document was read by Christians of different confessions, and by Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs and representatives of African and Asian traditional religions, among others. It begins by stating "that violence and terrorism are incompatible with the authentic Spirit of religion." In his letter, John Paul II expresses his conviction that "these ten propositions will be able to inspire the political and social action" of governments. "I was able to witness that the participants in the Assisi meeting were more committed than ever to the common conviction that humanity must choose between love and hatred," the Bishop of Rome wrote. Looking for an edge in the battle with Greece and Spain for tourists, Sicily has devised a masterplan: a Roman Catholic Mount Rushmore.

There are plans for the faces of the Pope, Mother Teresa and Padre Pio, a miracle-working friar, to be carved into the hills of Segesta in an effort to corner the lucrative pilgrim tourist niche. If the local mayor has his way, the sculptures will be big enough to be seen from space and will draw 250,000 visitors annually.

...Each face, 20 metres (65ft) high, will rival those of the four US presidents carved into the Black hills of South Dakota. The €5m (£3m) cost will be split between private investors, the regional government and nearby Calatafimi.

But the scheme has its critics. Environmentalists fear that Segesta's natural beauty will be destroyed, while archaeologists say funds would be better spent on excavations around the Greek ruins. And not all the locals are thrilled with the prospect of bulldozers shattering the valley's tranquility.

The critics' lawyers have promised a battle royal if Mr Cristaldi wins the backing of the regional government for a planning application.

VATICAN CITY: Pope John Paul has performed three exorcisms during his 23-year pontificate, including one as recently as September, one of the Catholic Church's leading exorcists said on Monday. Father Gabriele Amorth told Italy's La Stampa newspaper that the Pope had carried out his first exorcism in 1982. "This girl was rolling around on the ground. People in the Vatican had never seen anything like it. For us exorcists it is run of the mill," Amorth said. The Pope has since taken part in two more exorcisms, including that of a 20-year-old woman in September, to underline the importance of the ceremony. "He carried out these exorcisms because he wanted to give a powerful example. He wanted to give the message that we must once again start exorcising those who are possessed by demons," Amorth said. For Roman Catholics, exorcism is the casting out of what is believed to be an evil spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands. Amorth said possession by demons took many shapes. "I have seen many strange things . . . objects such as nails spat out. The devil told a woman that he would make her spit out a transistor radio and lo and behold she started spitting out bits and pieces of a radio transistor," he said. "I have seen levitations, and a force that needed six or eight men to hold the person still. Such things are rare, but they happen," he said. Amorth said the woman whom the Pope exorcised in September was still undergoing treatment. "It's a very serious case. A series of curses," he said. The interview was published a day after the Pope warned of the daily temptations of the devil during his Sunday address. "The devil, the 'prince of this world', even today continues his insidious actions. Each and every man . . . is tempted by the devil when he least expects it," the Pope said. VATICAN CITY, DEC. 9, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II expressed words of sadness and concern Friday when he entrusted the peace of the world to the Immaculate Conception.

"Dark clouds gather on the horizon of the world," the Pope said. "Humanity, which greeted the dawn of the third millennium with hope, now feels overwhelmed by the threat of new and disconcerting conflicts."

The Holy Father's words were part of a prayer he recited on his knees, before the historic statue of the Immaculate Conception, in Rome's Piazza di Spagna.

"Peace in the world is endangered," the Pontiff said, as he prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is why "we come to you, Immaculate Virgin, to ask you to obtain, as an understanding and strong Mother, that spirits, freed from the smoke of hatred, be open to mutual forgiveness, constructive solidarity and peace."

More than 10,000 people attended the open-air ceremony, including top city officials.

The Holy Father proposed Christian commitment as a source of hope, given the current grave situation.

"Every believer, in his own circumstances of life," must become a sign "so that all will see clearly that fidelity to Christ changes one's personal life and augurs for a future of peace, a better future for all," he concluded.

The sole inscription is "Vatican City." The euro should have begun to circulate in the Vatican on Jan. 1, as it did in the 12 member states of the European Union. The delay was caused by Italy´s "Casa della Moneta," which is responsible for the coinage and distribution of the euro. A total of 670,000 Vatican euros will be distributed.

In addition to the Vatican, the Republic of San Marino and the Principality of Monaco have concluded agreements to coin their currency in euros. The price of articles sold near the Vatican is already indicated in euros. The entrance fee for the Vatican Museums is now 10 euros ($9). Entrance to the museums is free once a month. A visit by elevator to the cupola of St. Peter´s Basilica costs 5 euros ($4.50). The euros of the 12 countries that have adopted this currency will circulate in the Vatican.

Pope John Paul II has welcomed the arrival of Europe's common currency. The pontiff says he hopes the euro promotes development and unity. "I address a special wish for peace and prosperity to the nations of the European Union that, today with the single currency, accomplish a historical goal," he said at a New Year's Day Mass. "Justice and solidarity grow in all of Europe, to the advantage of the entire human family!" he added. A dozen nations, including Italy, have adopted the euro. CHURCH-STATE RELATIONS UNDER REVIEW IN RUSSIA
Wide-Ranging Session Looks at Taxes, Privacy and Bioethics

MOSCOW, FEB. 3, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Religious leaders in Russia hope to hold discussions with state institutions in order to improve the financial situation of religious confessions.

That was one conclusion of the session of the Christian Interconfessional Consultative Committee Board (CICC), held Jan. 24 at the Department for External Church Relations of the Russian Orthodox Patriarchate.

The session focused on the Russian Federation Tax Code, which presupposes taxation of the activities of religious organizations.

Conferees emphasized the need to improve the mechanism of dialogue between the state and religious organizations and to work with state bodies in the matters of taxation. To that end, the group adopted and sent a letter on the topic to President Vladimir Putin, state Duma Speaker G. Seleznev and Federation Council chairman S. Mironov.

Religious leaders also voiced serious concerns about the threat to human dignity, rights and freedoms posed by the new opportunities of electronic control over citizens´ lives. A round table scheduled for April 17 will probe the issue. Scholars, state representatives and religious organizations will participate.

A conference on bioethics was scheduled for next autumn. It will look at the problems and impact of cloning, genetic engineering, abortion and artificial intelligence.

Conferees at the Jan. 24 event included Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad; Catholic Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz; and V.S. Pudov, chairman of the Moscow Representation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

Crandall pleads guilty to federal drug charges

In keeping with the faith he defied, the Rev. Thomas Crandall confessed to crimes in U.S. District Court on Friday that left his unsuspecting Milton parishioners aghast. Standing in a green jumpsuit before Chief Magistrate Roger Vinson, the Roman Catholic priest pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess and distribute more than 5 grams of methamphetamine and an indefinite amount of Ecstasy, waiving his right to a jury trial. He is scheduled for sentencing April 17.

...The popular priest admitted buying and selling methamphetamine and the party drug Ecstasy from his rectory next to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Milton and from his condominium in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

...In October, Crandall developed his own source in New Orleans and began to supply the informant. Investigators surveilled numerous phone conversations, and the informant documented several buys.

...In mid-December, Crandall told the informant that he wanted him to sell between 1,000 and 1,500 Ecstasy tablets for him. Crandall said he paid $6 per tablet and wanted them sold for $8.

JOHN PAUL II´S POINTERS ON HOW TO HUMANIZE GLOBALIZATION
New Culture, New Rules, New Institutions Needed

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 2, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Economic and social observers are not the only ones divided on the topic of globalization. Among Catholics, opinions differ widely on the pros and cons of the subject. To guide this reflection, John Paul II has spoken out on the issue a number of times.

...One of the most salient features of globalization is the growth of financial markets. On Sept. 11, 1999 John Paul II addressed the members of the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation, at the conclusion of a meeting in which they had examined the theme of ethics and finance.

...The Pontiff noted, however, that there is no international juridical or normative framework to guide financial markets.

...The Pope was careful to say that the globalizing markets in themselves are not bad, and that a summary condemnation of them is not justified.

...The Pontiff also stated that "the more global the market, the more it must be balanced by a global culture of solidarity that is attentive to the needs of the weakest." We should also avoid the mistake of making economic factors absolute, warned the Pope. The economy should always be "integrated into the overall fabric of social relations, of which it forms an important, but not exclusive, component."

Concerning the lack of institutions to govern globalization, the Pope on this occasion went beyond just calling for codes of conduct. "Globalization requires a new culture, new rules and new institutions at the world level," he said.

Often globalization is criticized for imposing a materialistic cultural vision. Last April 27 the Pope examined the role of markets and culture. Addressing the members of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, the Pontiff noted how "the market economy seems to have conquered virtually the entire world."

Catholics for a Free Choice leader Frances Kissling initiated the condom promotion and the attack on Catholicism. Among other things, the promotion -- called "Condoms4Life" -- attacks bishops in the Catholic Church as killers of women. Judie Brown of American Life League wasted little time in responding with a campaign of her own.

300 Religious Leaders Expected at Assisi
Extraordinary Response from Orthodox, Jewish and Muslim Leaders

ROME, JAN. 16, 2002 (Zenit.org).- A provisional list of participants in the Day of Prayer for Peace, scheduled for Jan. 24 in Assisi, reveals that at least 44 religious delegations with 300 people will attend.

Compared to the 1986 and 1993 meetings in Assisi, this is the first time a large Muslim representation from Iran will attend. The final list of participants will be published shortly before the Day of Prayer.

Eleven Orthodox patriarchs, led by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, are planning to attend. So are six ancient Eastern Churches, and 16 Churches and Christian communities of the West. There has been no confirmation from the Orthodox Patriarchate of Moscow.

Also expected are delegations from Judaism, Buddhism, Tenrikyo, Shintoism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism and traditional African religions, as well as other Christian denominations.

The Jewish delegation is particularly representative. It includes Chief Rabbi Emeritus Elio Toaff of Rome, who will be in Assisi with Riccardo di Segni, his successor and six other representatives of world Judaism, including French Grand Rabbi Samuel Rene Sirat and David Rosen, president of the Children of the Covenant association.

Never before have so many Muslims responded to a papal invitation as on this occasion. There will be delegates from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, the Philippines, Lebanon, Egypt, the United States, Albania, Bulgaria, Jordan, Jerusalem, Libya, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Italy. Grand Mufti Mustafa Ceric of Bosnia Herzegovina will also attend.

Rissho Kosei-Kai Buddhism will be represented by Nichiko Niwano, son of Nikkio Niwano, founder of this association, who was the first non-Christian observer at Second Vatican Council and who also attended the 1986 and 1993 meetings in Assisi.

In total, some 300 people will join the Pope and his entourage of 33 cardinals, archbishops and bishops headed by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state.

Also traveling in a special train from the Vatican will be representatives of movements and ecclesial communities, such as the Focolares, Sant'Egidio, Communion and Liberation, Neocatechumenal Way, and the Taizé Community.

The fragile, typewritten documents from the 1940s lay out the Nazi plan in grim detail: Take over the churches from within, using party sympathizers. Discredit, jail or kill Christian leaders. And re-indoctrinate the congregants. Give them a new faith - in Germany's Third Reich. More than a half-century ago, confidential U.S. government reports on the Nazi plans were prepared for the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg and will be available online for free starting tomorrow - some of them for the first time. These rare documents - in their original form, some with handwritten scrawls across them - are part of an online legal journal published by students of the Rutgers University School of Law at Camden. "When people think about the Holocaust, they think about the crimes against Jews, but here's a different perspective," said Julie Seltzer Mandel, a third-year law student who is editor of the Nuremberg Project for the Rutgers Journal of Law and Religion.

"A lot of people will say, 'I didn't realize that they were trying to convert Christians to a Nazi philosophy.' . . . They wanted to eliminate the Jews altogether, but they were also looking to eliminate Christianity." Mandel said the journal would post new Nuremberg documents about every six months, along with commentary from scholars across the world, on its Web site at www.lawandreligion.com.

BARCELONA, Spain -- Placing statuettes of defecating people in Nativity scenes is a Christmastime tradition so old and so strong in Spain's Catalonia region that even the Roman Catholic Church here doesn't dare try to ban it. When an exhibit of the figurines in a California museum sparked an angry denunciation from a Catholic group in the United States, Catalonians who cherish the tradition came ardently to its defense. "Unfortunately, there are intolerant people who are offended by any little thing," Josep Maria Joan, director of the Toy Museum of Catalonia, said Monday. His museum has a permanent collection of the figurines, known as caganers. Spanish artist Antoni Miralda's exposition "Poetical Gut" at Copia, a food, wine and arts museum in Napa, Calif., features ceramic figurines of the pope, nuns and angels with their pants down, squatting over their bowel movements.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, a 350,000-member group based in New York, has written to the museum's board of trustees to say it finds the show offensive. "When it's degrading, everybody knows it except the spin doctors who run the museums," the group's president, William Donohue, said Sunday. In a tradition that dates back to the 18th century, Catalonians hide caganers in Christmas Nativity scenes and invite friends over to try to find them. The figures symbolize fertilization and the hope for prosperity in the coming year, according to Joan. "It's really only a game," he said. "The caganer is not supposed to steal Jesus' spotlight in the manger scene. But it's logical that when traditions like this are exported they can be misunderstood."

An official with the Cultural Heritage department of the Barcelona Roman Catholic diocese, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the tradition as a harmless game for children and indicated the church has no plans to oppose it. Although the traditional caganer resembles a red-capped Catalonian peasant, Miralda is not the first to depict public figures. Since the 1940s, Catalonians have been making modern renditions of the caganer -- including, recently, Osama bin Laden. For Marti Torrent, founder of the 70-member Association of Friends of the Caganer, the meaning goes deeper than child's play.

To him, the caganer's act symbolizes "the fertilization of the earth" and pride in the land of Catalonia, whose inhabitants won the right to speak their own language and govern themselves after the 1939-75 Spanish dictatorship. "I know that American society is more strict with its religious ideas than we are in Catalonia," said Torrent, 89, who added that what the caganer does is natural. "Even the king has to do it every day or at least every other day."

16.5 Million Have Participated in Papal Audiences

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 19, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II has met with 16.5 million people in his Wednesday general audiences, the Vatican Press Office said today. Today's general audience was the last of the year. In 2001 the Pope received 550,000 pilgrims in the traditional midweek audiences. During the Jubilee Year 2000, John Paul II received 1,463,500 people at the audiences. The highest number, 1,585,700, attended during the first full year of his pontificate, 1979.

ANGELUS: BLESSING OF FIGURINES OF BABY JESUS

VATICAN CITY, DEC 16, 2001 (VIS) - Upon his return from visiting the Roman parish of St. Maria Josefa of the Heart of Jesus, John Paul II appeared at the window of his study in order to pray the angelus with pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square.

After the angelus and in keeping with tradition, the Pope blessed figurines of the Infant Jesus that had been brought to the square by the children of Rome. "I thank you," said the Holy Father, "for your Christmas greetings, and I return them with all my heart, invoking peace and serenity for you and your families."

The Pope went on to offer greetings, in English, to representatives of the United Nations World Food Programme who have completed a global survey on the feeding of children at school. "Hunger," he said, "is a continuing tragedy for millions of people around the world, and the school feeding programme has proved to be a very effective way of fighting it and helping the world's poorest children.
