Sabbath, February 13, 2010 "Our Christian Duty"

"It is part of the minister's work to teach those who accept the truth through his efforts, to bring the tithe to the storehouse, as an acknowledgment of their dependence upon God. The new converts should be fully enlightened as to their duty to return to the Lord His own. The command to pay tithe is so plain that there is no semblance of excuse for disregarding it. He who neglects to give instruction on this point, leaves undone a most important part of his work."  {CS 105.1}

1

1 Timothy 6:9, "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition."

2

1 Timothy 6:17, "Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;"

3

Haggai 2:8, "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts."

Psalms 50:10-11, "For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine."

4

Matthew 25:14, "For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods."

“Let each bear in mind that his capabilities are only lent him, and that by these God is testing him to see whether he will use these entrusted talents to honor God and work for the good of his brother and his neighbor.  {UL 273.2}

5

Deuteronomy 8:18, "But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth..."

6

“God also entrusts men with means. He gives them power to get wealth. He waters the earth with the dews of heaven and with the showers of refreshing rain. He gives the sunlight, which warms the earth, awakening to life the things of nature and causing them to flourish and bear fruit. And He asks for a return of His own.       Our money has not been given us that we might honor and glorify ourselves. As faithful stewards we are to use it for the honor and glory of God.” -COL 351

7

Luke 10:27, "And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself."

8

Proverbs 3:9, "Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:"

9

Leviticus 27:30, "And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD."

10

Malachi 3:8, "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings."

11

Hebrews 7:1-2, "For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;  To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;"

"From the earliest times, the Lord claimed a tithe as His; and this claim was recognized and honored. Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek, the priest of the most high God." -PP p. 525

Hebrews 6:20 we read, "Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec."

12

Galatians 3:29, "And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."

John 8:39, "They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham."

Matthew 23:23, "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone."

13

1 Corinthians 9:13, "Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?"

1 Corinthians 9:14, "Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

14

Matthew 22:21, "…Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's."

15

1 Corinthians 9:11, "If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?"

Romans 15:27, "…For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things."

Malachi 3:10, "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

Malachi 3:11, "And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts."

Luke 6:38, "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again."

"Brethren, do not leave the burden of your poor upon the people and institutions at Battle Creek, but come up nobly to the work and do your duty.  Deny yourselves of some things in your houses or in your dress, and lay by in some safe place a sum for the needy poor.  Let not your tithes and thank offerings to God be less, but let this be in addition." -  Testimonies, vol 4, p. 511

"The tithe is set apart for a special use.  It is not to be regarded as a poor fund.  It is to be especially devoted to the support of those who are bearing God's message to the world, and it should not be diverted from this purpose." - Review and Herald, vol 3, p. 418 col 2, Dec 1, 1896

"...those who are officiating in this work see that there is not money in the treasury to pay the minister.  They are withdrawing the tithe for other expenses,--to...some charity.  God is not glorified in any such work.  We have to raise our voice against this kind of management." - Manuscript 17, March 14, 1897 (Series A #10, p. 19):

Let each regularly examine his income, which is all a blessing from God, and set apart the tithe as a separate fund, to be sacredly the Lord's. This fund should not in any case be devoted to any other use; it is to be devoted solely to support the ministry of the gospel. After the tithe is set apart, let gifts and offering be apportioned, "as God hath prospered" you.”-- Review and Herald, May 9, 1893.  {CSW 129.2}
